Overview

Tolerated weed. These are on the Do Not Spread list in the Blue Mountains. Plants form a deep root network that takes a large amount of effort to remove. Useful in stabilising certain slopes. New growths should not be confused with Montbretia. These are being gradually removed and replaced with natives.

Same all year round with the exception of flowers in mid-late Summer.

Care Instructions

Dehead (cut off flowers) in summer before they go to seed. When removing the central rhizome needs to be dug out or it will regrow.

Plant History

Came with the house. There was one in the backyard and one around the side of the house that I removed In 2022. In Autumn 2023, after a council weed inspection, I removed a large clump from underneath the pine tree. In Winter 2025, I removed the rest from the front yard.

Personal Musings

Agapanthus are strangely therapeutic to remove in small quantities. Their short white tentacle like roots are good fun to dig up. I am only saying this for the small ones. A big group of them is a tangled mess that requires aggressively hacking through the roots to be able to get at the rhizome. This is difficult and not very satisfying as there are also parts of the plant that are left.
