Spiny Grass Weed

Overview

Close-up photo of spiny grass weed underneath a native grass

A weed with shallow rhizomes that run just under the surface and pop up periodically. Where some is seen, there is often some more nearby. If it is left, it will eventually generate small spiky seed balls that explode when touched to spread seeds everywhere. This happened the first year and I think the seeds will pop up for a few years combined with the fact that it is pretty difficult to manually remove and very difficult to spot.

Care Instructions

Can be pulled out by hand by gently grasping near the base and gradually pulling along the runners. If you haven’t pulled out some roots, you haven’t reached its base. Make sure to search in the immediate area for more of it.

Personal Musings

If you’ve ever played the Resident Evil 2 remake you are familiar with Nemesis. This plant is my Nemesis. You’ll just be walking along and BLAM! There’s some right in front of you, right when you least is expect it. Similar to Nemesis, it appears you can’t ever really kill it. It just keeps on popping up again later.

It doesn’t appear to ever really spread to enough of a level to threaten other plants, but it is distinctive and was the first weed I dedicated myself to eradicating.
