Overview

Fungi, fungi everywhere, but not a spore to see. These are not really a weed, but they are definitely not cultivated or particularly desired. They live their own myco-flavoured spin on life to their own timetable.

Care Instructions

Nil. If there is enough rain, the backyard and top of the front yard get saturated and mushrooms will proliferate everywhere. You can’t remove them and can’t make them grow anymore.

If found in dead wood, that wood needs to be thoroughly removed as the fungi can spread through the wood into root systems of other plants.

Plant History

These appeared sporadically after rain at various points throughout the entire time we have had the house. After 150mm+ of rain in Autumn 2024, with a nice existing layer of mulch they went crazy around the grevilleas to the point where I worried about their health. Everything survived though.

A white slime mould also appears on mulch after a while.

Personal Musings

I don’t know how I feel about the fungi. They indicate that the mulch is breaking down nicely and there is a nice, healthy ecosystem, but there are just so darn many of them. I tried removing some at one point, but more (and different) fungi just came back while I was away. I have now adopted a wait and see approach.
