Garden Galah

Hairy Bittercress (Flickweed)

Cardamine hirsuta

Overview

Weed with shallow roots that will self-seed pretty rapidly and cover the immediate area. Photo of bittercress taking over a patch of dead lawn ## Care Instructions Pull up and discard before it can go to seed. ## Plant History Appeared from Spring 2024 on a patch of grass that was killed from leaving some cut branches on top of it. It spread at a moderate rate and is difficult to remove from that patch of lawn.

At the end of Winter 2025 I made a concentrated effort to remove it from the backyard.

Personal Musings

I don’t like the bittercress. It is persistent and pernicious. It doesn’t even look like it should be spreading, you can’t see any seeds.
